Assam-Meghalaya border talks held in Guwahati, border dispute to be soon resolve

Guwahati: A crucial meeting to resolve the border issues between Assam-Meghalaya held in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma participated in the meeting to find solution of six areas of differences.

In the meeting, both the CM’s have decided to visits the disputed areas under Block 1 and Block 2.

Addressing a joint press conference in Guwahati, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “In the last part of June, we both will visit Karbi Anglong where unrest is going on as confidence building measures. The States will work with the spirit of long existing friendship between Meghalaya and Assam to resolve the area of differences,”.

“The six areas is little bite complicated in nature. Putting a time frame is not a good idea. We will meet in June to review the progress of work. Through process of discussion and mutual trust and confidence will be able to resolve other areas of differences,”.

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma said, “This is the beginning of the process to find solution for the remaining six areas of differences. We have asked regional committees to do fact finding and start the same process as was done for the first phase of talks,”.

“We will consult with stakeholders and we hope to get reports very soon, some areas may take time and some will be faster. We will visit the areas of West Jaintia Hills and Karbi Anglong in June,” Conrad Sangma stated.

He further added, “Some tension is prevailing there, we will appeal for peace and we will assure the people that through a process, we will arrived at solutions,”.

“I am confident in the leaders of CM Assam and government of India and we will find a way to resolve the matter with mutual trust and friendships. At the same time, we have asked the Survey of India to continue with their survey work of the first six area of differences and complete their surveys,” Sangma said.
