Assam: National Dengue Day observed in Tinsukia

Tinsukia: National Dengue Day is observed on Tuesday (May 16) every year with an aim to raise awareness about vector-borne disease and so that people can take steps to prevent the spread of diseases. Dengue cases usually surge in India during and after the monsoon season.

Alongwith the whole state of Assam, National Dengue Day was formally observed in Tinsukia district on Tuesday at the Conference hall of Makum Town Committee, Tinsukia with a public awareness meeting formally inaugurated by Dr Jayanta Bhattacharya, Joint Director of Health Services, Tinsukia in the presence of the Health Team of Hapjan Block PHC, District Surveillance Officer and District Malaria Officer, Offcials alongwith the Ward Commissioner and Members of Makum Town committee etc.

On the occasion, Dr Jayanta Bhattacharya stated that Dengue is a viral disease caused by the dengue virus. It is transmitted by the bite of the female Aedes aegypti mosquito which bites during day hours and the infected person develops symptoms 3-14 days after the bite.

National Dengue Day is dedicated to raising awareness about the disease at a national level and the government organises various programmes to give a boost to disease surveillance programs and public education on the causes, symptoms, and protocols to be followed when dengue is detected.

District Malaria officer with a short presentation explained the hall that there is no specific treatment for dengue fever exists but the symptoms of it can be treated with paracetamol or acetaminophen. To cure mild dengue fever oral administration of fluids or in serious cases, supportive care in a hospital with intravenous (IV) fluid and electrolytes is given.

In extreme cases, transfusion is done to compensate for blood loss.

She added that it is very fortunate that there are Zero deaths in Tinsukia due to both JE and Dengue. The main strgenth behind this is the awareness amongst the public to prevent these two dreadful disease.
