Sikkim: 7 tourists killeed in massive avalanche near Nathula Pass

Guwahati: At least seven tourists including a child were reportedly died due to massive avalanche near Nathula Pass in Sikkim on Tuesday.

Moreover, around 80 tourists are suspected to be still trapped in thick layers of snow following the avalanche near Nathula Pass in Sikkim.

“Troops of Trishakti Corps, Indian Army and team of BRO Project Swastik  swung into action immediately and launched an all-out rescue mission. 23 tourists rescued till 4 PM including 6 from deep valley and shifted to nearby medical facilities of Indian Army. Unfortunately, seven persons have succumbed. Search and rescue mission for the balance persons are underway by the Army, State Disaster Management Team and Police. In addition, 350 stranded tourists and 80 vehicles rescued after snow clearance from road,” stated Colonel Mahendra Rawat PRO Defence.

Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the central government is closely monitoring the situation at the site of avalanche near Nathula Pass in Sikkim

 Shah also stated that teams of national disaster response force (NDRF) are enroute to the avalanche site near Nathula Pass in Sikkim.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and the teams of NDRF will reach the affected area soon,” said union home minister Amit Shah.
