Assam: Dibrugarh Kuki Chavang Kut Celebration concluded

Guwahati, Nov 9: With festive mood and much enthusiasm, the Kukis of Upper Assam befittingly celebrated the most popular festival of the Chin-Kuki-Mizo tribes of the Northeast popularly known as ‘ChavangKut’ or simply called ‘Kut’.

The community living in and around Dibrugarh throng into CISF-BCPL township field to celebrate the concluding day of their weeklong Kuki ChavangKut celebration here in Dibrugarh on Tuesday.

 The township suddenly woke up to a lively and festive atmosphere with kuters/celebrants in their traditional attires enthralled fully in the celebration with variety of colorful and traditional dances, music, games and sports. With much pomp and gaiety, this traditional festival of the Kukis was celebrated after a gap of two year of pandemic hiatus.

The celebration of Kuki ChavangKut in upper Assam this year was hosted at two separate places, one in Dibrugarh and the other one at Jorhat. It may be noted that in Assam the 1st of November is Govt. restricted holiday on account of the Kuki ChavangKut festival. The week-long celebration in Dibrugarh commenced from 1st November and the concluding event was celebrated in sports extravaganza called ChavangGolseh and other cultural items.

 This concluding program with the theme ‘Unity through Sport’ begins with welcome greetings from the Chairman of the organizing committee, Mr.Kaikhohao Doungel and subsequently followed by flag hoisting, hoisted by Dr.Lamkholal Doungel, Chairman KWS, Dibrugarh. Addressing the gathering Dr Doungel appealed to the audience to practically walk the theme in the true spirit of the festival. “True to the spirit of the theme we must practically uphold unity, the prerequisite of peace and true happiness” said Dr. Doungel.

The well attended program witnessed the presence of some distinguished persons of the community. Few notable among them were Deputy Commandant, Pu.Thongminhao Haokip, Pu. Kailen Singson, Additional Divisional Railway Manager; and Pu. David R. Neingaite, Additional Superintendent of Police, Dibrugarh; Assistant General Manager, SBI; and a host of other officers. In a rare display of talents, Kailen Singson, ADRM, Thongminhao Haokip, DC CISF, and David R. Neingaite, ASP also performed on stage with songs and music. Speaking on the occasion K.Singson appreciated the ChavangKut organizer and said “how beautiful it is when brothers come together in unity.”

 In the same breath ASP David Neingaite also spoke and highly appreciated and encouraged the community to promote, protect and carry on forward the good work of celebration and observance of cultural festivals. On enquiry about the festival, Mr. SeikholenKipgen, the Secretary organizing Committee said that “Kuki ChavangKut is the most important traditional post-harvest autumn festival of the Kuki tribes and this year is very special because the last two years there was not much celebration because of the pandemic.”

The trophies and medals of sports and games were given away to individual winners and winning teams by Eric Singson, Dr.L.Doungel, Dr.LamjavahChangsan, Dr.S.Das, Haopu Doungel. Earlier on the occasion, the program was ritualistically inaugurated with words of invocation to Almighty by Pi.KimlamLhungdim. The daylong program formally came to an end with vote of thanks from the organizing Secretary Seikholen Kipgen and closing prayer from J.Touthang.
